A method book for the development of an improvisational style where you learn to play melodic lines in chords.....like Wes did. The cover says: "A guide for developing a chordal vocabulary for improvisation. Written with the styles of Wes Montgomery, Cal Collins, and Barney Kessel in mind.”  There are many books which deal with chord forms, comping, and chord-melody playing, but these do not provide a vocabulary for the kind of harmonized soloing that Wes and others have done. To fill that need, Chordal Bebop Lines provides hundreds of actual phrases and patterns in chords. (Much like Jerry Coker's Patterns for jazz, only the lines are in chords, for guitar.) Melodic lines, in chords, are written with a melody line and a fret diagram by each melody note. Poor readers can benefit greatly from this style of writing. Many actual phrases by Wes, Cal Collins, and Barney Kessel. Also some solo excerpts by these players.

           Text also includes:
  • Chord forms and chord scales;  Glossary of common chord voicings;  28 positions/inversions for each of the following chord qualities:  minor 7, major 7, diminished 7, minor 7 b5, dominant 7, dominant 7 b5. This is explored on string sets 1232, 2345, 3456, 1245, 2356, 6432, and 5321.
  • Chord scales: lays a foundation for improvising in lines of chords -- Major chord scales; dominant chord scales (G7 sound in lines of chords, for example); harmonic minor chord scles and other minor chord scales including natural minor, and Dorian. .

Cover blurb reads: “Book II in a new series. An advanced guide for developing a linear chordal vocabulary for improvisation. Written with the styles of Wes Montgomery, Cal Collins and Barney Kessel in mind. Complete with chordal patterns and solo excerpts from the masters!"  Within the introduction: "Previously, there have been many texts available that teach chord systems and comping approaches, but none exist on the market that so comprehensively teach how to execute improvised eighth-note lines of chords in the style of Wes, as does volume 2."

This book makes Barney's approach available to all of us in a fast easy way with all the chords written in diagram form.....his chord lines sound complex but watch the moving voices and play them immediately...they are not hard to play for intermediate and advanced jazz guitarists who already possess some knowledge of 4-note inversions and voicings up the neck. Very cool project book.
